This is the latest entry into the Erica Falck series. In this book Patrik and Erica now have twin boys and Anna is trying to recover from her car accident - and losing her unborn son.We start with the murder of a man who seems without fault. Well liked by his colleagues and all those who know him, no one seems to have a clue as to who would want to shoot him. He has moved back to Fallbacka after receiving a savage beating. He connects with Nathalie, a woman who, as a young girl, he had a relationship. She is spending time on "Ghost Island" from which it is said that the dead never leave. The story twists and turns through several false leads until, finally, we get a clue. Mellberg makes a colossal blunder and the fallout is devastating.Through flashbacks, we learn of an 1870 - 1871 incident on Ghost Island. The ending is brilliant. I never saw it coming, although I did suspect something fishy about Nathalie's son.Not as good as some of her previous books, although it was close. I will continue to read Camilla Lackberg's books as they become available.

There is a Swedish island named Graskar that the locals call Ghost Isle. Anyone who dies on the island stays there, so it's said. The ghosts are friendly, almost affectionate, and would love to advise the suffering humans who live there embroiled in dangerous relationships. But their warnings are rarely heeded in time. While all this ghostly activities are going on, the police in Fjallbacka are faced with a perplexing murder case. A nice young man of sterling character has been shot dead in his apartment. As usual, Patrik Hedstrom is leading the investigation, and his wife Erica is doing some snooping on her own. The lazy obnoxious police chief Mellberg is making stupider mistakes than ever. And false clues are further confusing the picture.Patrik and Erica now have twin infant sons, as well as their little daughter. And Erica has new worries about her emotionally fragile sister Anna, who just lost a baby. So in addition to murders and tragedies past and present, we have plenty of family dramas.Life in small town Fallbacka gets very lively in this book, or should I say deadly? The plot is dense with happenings. It's fun to follow the familiar characters we've met in every book. And the new faces are interesting too.I've enjoyed all the books in this series, and they get better and better. Unfortunately, I think this may be the last book available in English translation.

If you read Scandinavian noir but have had your fill of deranged serial killers, pick up a copy of The Lost Boy by Camilla Läckberg. Like the preceding novels in her bestselling Fjällbacka series, The Lost Boy shines with in-depth characterization and complex plotting that offers surprises to the very end. If you're insightful about psychology, you might pick up well in advance on a couple of the plot's major twists and turns—but it's very unlikely you'll catch them all. Camilla Läckberg is good!In a devastating car crash, Ericka Falck's infant nephew died and she was forced to undergo a Caesarian to give birth to premature twin boys. To compound the terror, Ericka's husband, Detective Patrik Hedström, immediately collapsed from what appeared to be a heart attack. But months have passed, and finally all's well in the Falck/Hedström home. The twins are thriving, their two-year-old sister dotes on them, and both Ericka and Patrik are fully recovered: Patrik had collapsed from stress, not a heart attack. But Ericka's younger sister, Anna, was in the car and suffered an abortion in the crash. Now she is despondent and unresponsive to her children, her husband, and Ericka.Against this backdrop, six other stories begin unspooling. A former classmate of Ericka's has hidden in her cottage on a nearby island with her five-year-old son; her husband has been murdered, and they hope to evade the same fate. In flashbacks to the 1870s, a young woman living on the same island has been virtually enslaved by her cruel husband. A brother-and-sister team of con artists, having swindled a fortune from the town of Fjällbacka, is preparing to flee. The town's treasurer has been murdered, too. A battered wife and her two children are holed up in Copenhagen, having fled Sweden. And Patrik's incompetent boss, the chief of police, is getting on the nerves of the two younger lesbian women who live with him and his girlfriend. (One of them is her daughter.) Yes, a whole lot happens in a Camilla Läckberg novel! If there is any overarching theme to The Lost Boy, it's domestic violence. The investigation Patrik and his colleagues undertake into the murder of the town's treasurer gives them (and the reader) a window on the issue and how it's dealt with in Sweden.About the authorCamilla Läckberg was born in Fjällbacka, Sweden, the setting for all her novels about Patrik Hedström and Ericka Falck. She has written ten novels to date in the Fjällbacka series. As best I can tell, all have been translated into English. The most recent, The Witch (2017), isn't available in the United States at this writing. Of the other nine, six have appeared in Kindle editions. I've now read and reviewed all six.

Another in the series featuring Patrik Hedstrom and his wife, Erica Falck. It is a ghost story featuring an island off the coast of Fjallbacka (Sweden) where it is said “the dead never leave the island”. The story involves the financier of one of the town's largest projects, Mats Sverin, who is found murdered. It appears that he had no enemies and his background was largely unknown. His school-day girlfriend, Nathalie has fled from her abusive husband to the island owned by her family with her 5 year old son. Chapters alternate from present day happenings to the story set in 1870 where a young woman is taken to the lighthouse married to the lighthouse keeper but alone apart from the assistant lighhouse keeper. These episodes are particularly dark and there is constant reference in both time zones to the dead people who talk to the inhabitants of the island. The macabre atmosphere is, as always, lightened by the domestic narrative of Patrick, Erica and their growing family (they now have a daughter and twin boys). A really good read. Comfortable to return to familiar characters. I really enjoy these books.
