I got this book for a friend of mine whose beloved dog, Dexter, had recently passed. She was having a very hard time dealing with her grief, and as someone who knows the pain of losing an animal, I thought this book seemed like it could be a comfort to her.Jon Katz writes with a true understanding of what animal lovers experience when they've lost a furry family member. Animals aren't accessories, and they're not interchangeable - they're individual, unique personalities and each one leaves an enormous hole when they're gone.My friend cried through the entire book, but found solace in the fact that she isn't alone in her grief. GOING HOME is a beautiful tribute to the animals we share our lives with.

We had to put down our cat after being with him for 16 1/2 years. He came down with cancer a little over a year ago and with medications it slowed the progression of the disease but we knew that the remaining time with him was going to be limited. We loved him dearly and spoiled him even more so during the last months of his life. Even though we knew the day was coming, we dreaded the reality of it. I was overcome with grief and missed him dearly! I decided to try this book to see if it could help. It is an easy read and although the tears of grief flowed while I read the book, it helped me significantly transition from sorrow and grief stricken to embracing the fond memories that we had together with Hunter, our cat, and what a positive impact he had on our lives. Those memories will always be with us. Katz's discussion about being an advocate for your animal and how they think versus people was extremely helpful. He discusses many topics and emotions you are going through as a result of your loss. I highly recommend this book to those that will be putting your pet down or will be shortly. He also has great advise when children are in the family and how to include them in the process.

Mr. Katz's slim book is a mixture of the philosophical as well as a confessional. Though the work focuses primarily on his experiences with dogs, he also addresses how he and a few others dealt with the death of beloved animals such as cats, chickens, a 3000-pound steer, and sheep. Most readers, I imagine, can find some practical or spiritual support in the quick read. The author runs a small farm in Vermont where life and death are constant companions. The first hundred pages of the 166-page work avoid any otherworldly statements. Mr. Katz views himself as a rationalist but appears to succumb to some forms of spiritualism to handle the loss of certain animals. He addresses such subjects as how emotions play out; addressing death to children; being an advocate for your animal; preparing for the inevitable day; the nature of grief; and possibly adopting another pet. The Afterword is written by Debra Katz, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, who presents a brief somewhat clinical explanation which I enjoyed. Mr. Katz's perspective will not likely sit well with PETA-sorta people. The author states, "Our culture does not want to deal with death, loss, or grief. People avoid it, discourage it, flee from it. We are encouraged to hide grief, as if it were shameful, rather than deal with it more forthrightly. As a consequence, those who are dealing with death and loss do not have an understanding environment in which to grieve." This has also been my observation over many decades. I'm agnostic and have owned four dogs. Two we chose to euthanize, one because of age and the other a 6-year-old who had a brain tumor. Many of Mr. Katz's observations rang true to me. However, his spiritual conclusions I took with a grain of salt. Another reader may embrace them. Either way is fine. The book is not The Gospel According to Jon Katz that you must follow his edicts but it is a mild instructional in which you can pick and choose what seems valid for you. If the book gives the reader comfort, then you've come out ahead of the game.

Having a dog in your family suffers the eventual problem of death.........when you best friend dies what do you do? My very most favorite Doberman breeding bitch started acting poorly with a bad cough too. I took her immediately to the vet who saw a fast growing mass in her left lung. I kept her home that night and then about an hour after arriving home she was laying in my lap when she looked in my eyes, coughed and died. I sobbed for two days straight. I can't ever recall being so devastated. She had protected the entire family for her short seven years.I can't tell you how bad I felt. Many folks would just say "No more sad times, I just won't get another dog." What a sad decision that would be. I still have her son who makes my heart sing daily. He sleeps on our bed with his head right next to me on our pillow. He makes me so happy and I know one day he'll pass on but the happiness given to my wife and I are very much worth the sadness at the end. GOD has blessed us beyond compare.

Have read four chapters. Loss my little dog pal Bill very recently. Good words to help me get thru. I have lost beloved pets before, dogs, cats, etc. but Bill caught me by surprise, suddenly he was gone. He was the dog who had sat with me in my lap, while stuck in the Tehachapi pass. For two hours. Close buddy. So getting thru, thank you Mr. Katz.
